Renewable Energy Featured Strongly in Montana’s Clean Power Plan Compliance Options

Helena, Mont.-- Today, Montana Governor Bullock introduced a new white paper authored by Montana's Department of Environmental Quality laying out various compliance pathways for the state to reach the emission’s rate goals proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Power Plan.

All of the potential pathways include the use of renewable energy as a compliance mechanism.

"We appreciate Governor Bullock's solutions-oriented approach to making EPA's Clean Power Plan work for Montana's energy economy," said Renewable Northwest's Montana Policy Manager, Jeff L. Fox.  "Renewable energy is ready to make considerable contributions to the region.  Aggressively developing more renewable energy resources in Montana will help create jobs and economic development while also helping to achieve clean air goals."

Montana’s wind energy resource ranks third in the United States, but only a fraction of it has been developed. Despite the excellent potential, Montana currently only ranks 21st in the nation for installed capacity. The existing 650 megawatts of wind power in Montana has brought in over $1.6 billion of capital investment.  Energy efficiency and solar resources are also well positioned to help offset Montana’s dependence on fossil fuels.
