By
purchasing green power, you will divert your energy dollars away
from high-impact hydropower, coal, gas and nuclear plants, and instead
invest in clean, renewable resources. The Northwest's environment
economy, environment and human health will benefit from that investment.
What's wrong with the current power system?
Generating electricity is a significant source of air pollution
and a major cause of smog, acid rain and habitat destruction. About
40% of the electricity consumed in the Northwest comes from burning
fossil fuels, such as coal and gas. These and other conventional
sources of electricity harm human health, degrade ecosystems and
add to global warming. Using wind power shifts the electricity system
towards clean resources that keep the air clean and preserve our
quality of life.
Renewables are clean
Solar, wind and geothermal resources neither harm fish nor create
the air, water and land pollution associated with fossil fuels.
Replacing fossil fuel facilities with renewable resources will improve
regional air quality. Renewables are the perfect solution to traditional
power sources, which are the country's single largest source of
air pollution.
The
Northwest will benefit from renewables
The Northwest is blessed with abundant renewable resource potential.
With our varied climate zones and geology, we have enough potential
solar, wind and geothermal resources to satisfy at least 40 percent
of our electricity needs. Further, remarkable improvements in renewable
technologies are continuously reducing their costs and expanding
the Northwest's already large renewable resource base.
Green power is good for our region's economy
While traditional fossil fuels may seem less costly up front, the
environmental, defense and health costs of these sources raises
insurance premiums, cleanup costs and national defense expenditures.
Renewable energy eliminates much of this risk, and since there are
no fuel costs, they eliminate the uncertainty and expense of future
fuel price increases.
Investing in renewable energy will have a positive effect on the
economy of the Northwest. Some of the world's largest producers
of renewable products -- photovoltaic panels and wind technologies
-- are based in Washington and Oregon. Investing in renewables keeps
in the Northwest dollars that would otherwise leave the region to
pay for fossil fuels.
Renewables fit into our current system
As the hydroelecric system changes to protect fish, new renewable
resources can replace the lost hydropower and keep the system and
our air clean.
