AUDUBON SOCIETY OF PORTLAND "GOES GREEN"
AND SIGNS
UP FOR 100 PERCENT RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY
Encourages Additional Sign-ups for PGE’s and Pacific Power’s
Renewable Power Options through New Member Outreach
Portland,
OR July 2, 2003 Audubon Society of Portland announced today
that it is now purchasing electricity that is made from 100 percent
renewable sources at its main and Marmot campuses. The Audubon Society
of Portland also announced a new member outreach program, in agreement
with Renewable Northwest Project, Green Mountain Energy Company,
Pacific Power and Portland General Electric (PGE), to spur additional
signups for renewable energy.
By purchasing
100 percent renewable energy from PGE, the Audubon Society of Portland
is preventing more than 14 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) production
(nearly 29,000 pounds) each year, as much as a car makes in nearly
32,000 miles. It would take almost 10 acres of trees an entire year
to remove that amount of CO2 from the air.
"As consumers
we have the power to directly impact air quality as well as our
dependency upon fossil fuels by purchasing renewable energy. This
outreach partnership is a great way for Audubon Society of Portland
and its membership to affect positive change," said Tammi Miller,
conservation committee member, Audubon Society of Portland.
The Audubon
Society of Portland also has joined with the Renewable Northwest
Project (RNP), a regional non-profit promoting solar, wind, and
geothermal energy, to create an outreach program to further support
renewable energy in Portland. Through this program, the Audubon
Society of Portland is educating thousands of members about the
benefits of renewable energy and encouraging them to sign up for
one of the three renewable energy options offered by both PGE and
Pacific Power.
"Audubon Society
of Portland is making a great commitment in support of renewable
energy with both their purchase through PGE and their outreach efforts,"
said Rachel Shimshak, director of the Renewable Northwest Project.
"Portland Audubon and other environmental groups have allowed us
to reach a significant number of consumers with information about
renewable energy."
"We are honored
to be working with such a prestigious organization to promote and
advance renewable energy in Oregon," said Karen Norris, Oregon program
director for Green Mountain Energy Company. "Audubon Society of
Portland’s support of renewable energy helps keep Oregon clean by
reducing the organization’s share of CO2 emissions from electricity
use. Buying cleaner electricity and encouraging its members to do
the same is consistent with Audubon’s mission as an environmental
steward."
"The Audubon
Society of Portland is a leader as more environmentally conscious
organizations choose a ‘green’ power supply," said Thor Hinckley,
PGE’s renewable products manager. "We’re very pleased to support
the society by meeting its renewable energy needs."
Audubon Society
of Portland’s outreach activities include articles in its monthly
newsletter, the Audubon Warbler; sign-up sheets and information
at the organization’s administrative offices, as well as a special
section on the website www.audubonportland.org/renew.html that educates
members about their renewable energy options and links to enrollment
information.
Since March
1, 2002, Oregonians have been able to choose from three renewable
power options: Renewable Usage Green Mountain Energy‚ Electricity;
Habitat Green Mountain Energy‚ Salmon-Friendly Plan; and Fixed
Renewable PGE’s Clean Windsm and Pacific Power’s Blue Skysm wind
power. Customer sign-ups for the utilities’ renewable energy offerings
have more than quadrupled. Between Pacific Power and PGE over 37,000
Oregonians have signed up for one of the three renewable power options.
As part of the
Renewable Northwest Project’s outreach program, the Audubon Society
of Portland will receive $15 for each enrollment in one of these
renewable options through the Audubon Society of Portland program.(1)
